| Harris Family Farms includes Jim & Charity Harris, her daughters Ashly & Burgundy and their daughter, Hope. Jim & Charity Harris met November 13, 2003 & got married April 20, 2005 in North Negril, Jamaica, West Indies. James Harris grew up on a family cash-crop farm of about 500 acres. His parents, Norman & Beverly Harris, grow grain corn for ethanol, winter wheat and soybeans. James continues to help on their farm whenever needed. Both sets of James’ grandparents and one set of great-grandparents were also farmers, starting with livestock and Charity’s Mother was the district manager for Doctor Pet Centers in Louisiana & then California when Charity was in high school. Charity performed almost all of the basic small animal care. This included not just kennel cleaning & animal bathing but also shots, worming & diabetic care. Charity spent two summers on her aunt’s farm in Texas where she was able to care for the horses & chickens. Charity helped train the ½ wild mustang ½ Quarter Horse foals that her aunt bred & also trained neighbor’s horses for barrel racing. Charity competed in the weekly rodeos, including barrel racing, pole bending & once even rode a Jr. Bull. During the second summer she worked at the Bandara Racetrack as an Assistant Horse Trainer. December 2005 we started our first farm. We started with "three little pigs", Durocs. Then added 6 Spotted & 7 Hereford pigs. In May 2006 we started selling our all-natural pork Saturdays at the Poynette Farmer's Market. September 2006 we put a down payment on and moved into what we thought was going to be OUR farm. And added chickens of course. Then we added more pigs and 2 cows over the winter. Early in 2007 we added more chickens and some turkeys. We also fostered a few dogs and a few puppies. We were selling well and I was getting a contract to supply a pretty fancy restaurant in Madison. However, we were not able to make our Spring Balloon payment and lost our land contract on the farm. We had to sell everything off and move to Portage, WI. We're still there. Shortly after moving to Portage, I became pregnant. I had to spend July-Dec 2007 on bed rest. Our daughter, Hope, was born & died on November 24, 2007. I spent all of 2008 recovering physically & emotionally. Over the December 2008 holidays, we decided that it was the right time for me to start an online business. So I started remodeling this website, created a store on ebay and added an e-store to this website. I'm having fun creating jewelry, using my computer skills, learning better photography skills and making use of my business, accounting and tax classes. Jim is at busy working at Poynette Iron Works, helping on his parents' farm, learning how to hunt & playing Guitar Hero. Once this business gets going, our next goal is to buy a Savannah cat. One day maybe we can have a hobby farm again. Jim misses the pigs terribly. I miss two of them in particular -- Angel & Dozer, the best sow & boar you could ever want. But don't tell them that -- they thought they were dogs, *smile*. |
